FAQ
What fractions do 4th graders learn?
Fourth grade is the big fractions year. Students recognize and generate equivalent fractions (4.NF.1), compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators (4.NF.2), and add and subtract fractions with like denominators (4.NF.3). They also begin multiplying a fraction by a whole number and working with decimal notation for fractions.
What are equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions name the same amount with different numbers — 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are all equivalent. You make an equivalent fraction by multiplying (or dividing) the numerator and denominator by the same number. The Equivalent Fractions mode gives a fraction and a blank to fill in so the two fractions are equal (CCSS 4.NF.1).
How do 4th graders compare fractions?
To compare fractions with unlike denominators, students rewrite them with a common denominator or compare each to a benchmark like 1/2. The answer is written with the symbols >, =, or < (CCSS 4.NF.2). The Comparing mode gives two fractions and a box to fill in the correct symbol.
