Printable uppercase letter tracing
Choose Uppercase (A–Z) above to load the capital-letter sheet. Capitals are the best place to start: every uppercase letter begins at the top, and most are built from straight lines (E, F, H, L, T) or a single curve (C, G, O, S). Children trace a solid model letter first, then follow the dotted copies across the line. Print one page for the whole alphabet, or trace the same few letters several days running until the shape sticks.
Lowercase letter tracing worksheets
Switch the letter case to Lowercase (a–z) for the small-letter sheet. Lowercase letters are a step harder — they add curves (a, e, s), ascenders that reach the top line (b, d, h, k, l), and descenders that drop below the baseline (g, j, p, q, y). The dotted guides show exactly where each part of the letter sits, so children learn correct height and placement, not just the shape. Move to lowercase once capitals feel easy.
How to teach letter formation
- Start at the top. Almost every letter begins with a stroke from the top down. Teaching this one habit prevents the bottom-up scribbling that's hard to unlearn later.
- Name it, sound it, trace it. Have the child say the letter's name and sound while tracing — it ties handwriting to phonics and letter recognition at the same time.
- Group letters by stroke. Practice the straight-line family (l, t, i, h) together, then the curve family (c, o, a, e), so similar movements reinforce each other.
- Short and frequent wins. A few minutes on two or three letters a day builds steadier muscle memory than tracing all 26 at once.
- Fade the support. Move from tracing the dotted letters to copying a model letter, then to writing from memory once the formation is automatic.

FAQ
Are these letter tracing worksheets free to download?
Yes. Print the uppercase A–Z or lowercase a–z sheet straight from your browser, or use Download PDF to save it — no signup, no email, no watermark.
Should my child trace uppercase or lowercase letters first?
Most teachers start with uppercase because the strokes are simpler — mostly straight lines and full circles that all begin at the top. Once a child can form capitals confidently, switch to lowercase, which adds curves, tails, and letters that sit below the line.
What age is letter tracing for?
Tracing suits children roughly ages 3–6 (pre-K through kindergarten) who can already hold a pencil and make basic marks. A few minutes a day on two or three letters beats tracing the whole alphabet in one sitting.
How does tracing help kids learn to write?
Following the dotted path builds the muscle memory for each letter's shape and stroke order before a child writes it unaided. Pairing the trace with the letter's name and sound also reinforces phonics and letter recognition.
